Our provider has a standing order for one of our TB patients to report daily for observation of TB medication consumption. This is required by the state to have the patient monitored while medication is being consumed - then is followed up by documenting the process in addition to filling out paperwork also required by the state.

The daily visits last for 6 months - would this be unusual to report a 99211 for every visit? taking into consideration the documentation process and paperwork involved?

Hi Heather,

I would look at AAPC's Healthcare Business Monthly magazine for the month of April and go to page 26. It cleared up a lot of questions pertaining to 99211 for me.

Being you have an order from a physician and documentation supports the need you may be ok. If the visit lasts less than five minutes you may want to reconsider billing, however. I'd also check with your payer to confirm guidelines.
