I know January 2021 guidelines are changing, but is there a simple tool to use when deciding between
99203/99213 vs. 99204/99214?

Appreciate the feedback

Until 2021 99203 & 99213 are not the same and have different key components. The biggest problem coders have with 99214 using 1995 is "What is a more detailed exam". Your company/clinic needs to put down in writing what they think it is, keep it on file, and make sure that all coders follow that. You may try to avoid this conundrum and just follow 1997 instead, but you could be short changing your providers that way. It's easier to get 99214 in 1995 than 1997. As well as having a more detailed exam 99214 requires moderate MDM as well. Hope this helps.
