A MD sees a patient in hospital for one week long stay. He sees patient subsequently twice in one day. Can 99231 be billed twice for same day?
Are both visits combined for 1 total 99231 or 99232?
Are both visits billed separately by same provider?
thank you

Combine the work of the two visits and then choose a code. It wouldn't necessarily be 99231 plus 99231 equals 99232. 99231 means the patient is stable. If the patient was seen twice in one day, it doesn't sound like they were stable. Did the MD say it was 99231 twice? Or did someone else choose that code? If the patient had a rapid response called or other rapid decline, it could be 99233 or even a critical care code.
