We have an inpatient addicted to meth and other drugs. Physician has documented that he advised the patient to stop using. Is it billed as 99406 or is there another appropriate code?
 
This set of codes need the time spent counseling listed in minutes in order to bill for them.

These codes are used for smoking cessation counseling only:

99406: 3 min to 10 mins
99407: greater than 10 mins

There is another set of codes for alcohol/substance abuse:

99408: alcohol and/or substance abuse (other than tobacco) structured screening (AUDIT, DAST) and brief intervention (SBI) services; 15 to 30 mins
99409: greater than 30 mins
