I have a question regarding the initial newborn code 99460. We are having a discussion in the office and needed some feedback.
Scenario:
newborn baby born 06/18/2013
a provider that is not affiliated with our office does the initial visit(99460)on 06/18/2013
one of our providers does subsequent visit (99462) on 06/19/2013
one of our providers does discharge (99238) on 06/20/2013

Is it okay to bill a 99460 on 06/19/2013 because that is the first time one of our providers has seen the patient. I dont think this is correct because someone else will be billing that initial code and we will get a denial.

The Coding Tip listed in the 2013 CPT book for E/M states, "A new patient is one who has not received any professional services from the physician/qualified health care professional or another physician/qualified health care professional of the EXACT same specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice, within the past three years."

The key words are "who belongs to the same group practice".

I think both physicians would bill 99460 based upon this statement.
