I am new to hospitalist/newborn coding. I have a combined progress note/discharge summary. The hospitalist put up 99462 and 99238 for the same DOS. Is this okay to bill this way? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No it is not. Per the CPT Assistant "The hospital discharge day codes 99238 and 99239 include all the E/M services performed on the day of discharge. Therefore, it is not appropriate to separately report a subsequent hospital care code (99231-99233) if a hospital care discharge service (99238 or 99239) is performed on the same day." This logic would apply to newborn care on the same date of service.
