Good day,

I received my CPC-A in 2022. Back then I was working as a Front Desk Coordinator for a Family Medicine Residency Clinic. That same year I left, starting a new job as a Verification Specialist, working in an insurance dept. for Outpatient Rehab. I took the job to get my foot in the door at the hospital. I found that I loved it and I am still currently employed there. When my 2 years was up, I asked how I could get my "A" removed, seeing I wasn't in a coding position. I have had 2 different people try to help me, but both ended up not really having an answer and gave up. I see the letter here on the site as the template for the "A" removal, but it mentions time spent coding. I don't code at this job-the codes come to me. Does anyone have any guidance for me? Can I get the "A" removed as a verification specialist or do I need to get into an actual coding role to do so?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I think it depends on what you are doing, etc. on a daily basis in your role. If you're verifying insurance and benefits, etc. I am not sure that's really enough or not. Other than that you would have to do the other option described in the link.
They have to validate you have been "using" the code sets. You don't have to be actively coding, you have to be using the codes. This could be looking them up, verifying, reading them, etc. If using the template, the individuals filling it out would have to be able to show that you have: "knowledge in utilizing and maneuvering through the ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding books, which are required on a daily basis." and indicate: "Current responsibilities include:"

Option 1: 2-year employment verification

This option for apprenticeship removal utilizes 2 years of on-the-job coding experience. Employment verification from previous employers, current employers, externships, or a combination of all three are accepted. Professional coding experience both before and after certification applies.

Submission requirements:
  • Employer(s) verification of at least 2-years on-the-job experience using the CPT, ICD-10-CM, or HCPCS Level II code sets.
  • Only employers, supervisors, or an HR department can verify time spent coding within an organization.
  • Letter(s) of verification employers and externships must meet these requirements:
    • Include coding experience achieved, provided with start and end dates of employment or externship
    • Submitted on company letterhead
    • Hand signed, dated, and include current contact information for verification purposes
    • Provided in a non-editable format (pdf) for member to upload
    • Optional employment verification template
