Wiki abn modifiers

I am just curious how often everyone uses the GA modifier for a procedure that you have had an ABN signed for. I often don't know that an ABN has been signed until after the billing is completed. Is the modifier something that is mandatory to use to be able to bill the patient ?

The modifier is what tells Medicare the ABN is on file and it would then become patient responsibility without the modifier it will be a write off for your facility.
