Hello,

For surgical abortion procedures 59840 or 59841 does it include IM/IV medications or do we bill for each medication. Providers document Moderate sedation and then a separate medication list. Example:

PROCEDURE:
Surgical abortion

Medications
Metronidazole PO 500 mg
Ketorolac IV 30 mg
Misoprostol (buccal) 400 mcg
Ondansetron 8 mg

Moderate sedation:
Fentanyl IV 150 mcg
Midazolam IV 4 mg

Thank you in advance

Are you asking on behalf of the physician who performed the moderate sedation or the facility? If your physician did not supply the drugs (that is, it is a cost to your practice), you do not bill the drugs at all. Also, please take the time to read the CPT guidelines for moderate sedation which tells you what is included pre, intra, and post sedation as some of my clients are getting denials due to inadequate documentation of the work performed. As to the list of medications, are you licensed in your state to dispense oral medications? If so you can bill. You can also bill the Ketorolac as a medication, just not as an IV injection procedure.
