Does anyone know if there is a way to code acute cor pulmonale without PE in ICD-10? There only seem to be codes with PE, and occasionally we see that Dx in patient's without PE.

how to code acute cor pulmonale without PE

Hello everyone,
I will take a stab at this. There are two main causes for acute cor pulmonale- PE and ARDS- I believe you need to query the provider and if due to the ARDS then that would be the primary Dx followed by cor pulmonale secondary? I do not believe the cor pulmonale would be a sign or symptom of the ARDS in this case so it would be coded.

cor pulmonale

I26.09. I had the same question, but if you look at the descriptive comment, the first part says Other P.E. with acute cor pulmonale, then under that it says ACUTE COR PULMONALE NOS. Hope that helps
