Hello,


If Physician documented Acute respiratory failre due to COPD exacerbation, If ARF has more relative weighage compare to COPD what will be the Pdx?

It is chiefly depends on the condition which occasioned the admission (Resp failure or COPD).

COPD and Respiratory failure.

Hi,

It's still a mystery for the Inpatient setting to assign Pdx between COPD exacerbation and respiratory failure.

If both condition chiefly occasioning the admit , assign Pdx based on work up.

If the patient oxygen saturation less than 88% PH less than 7.35,CO2 saturation more than 60% on admit and had ventilation setting like(BIPAP, CPAP) consider Respiratory Failure as pdx.

If the patient didn't meets above criteria please assign COPD exacerbation as Pdx.

If any invasive therapy provided (i.e mechanical ventilation), i would go with respiratory failure as a PDX otherwise always COPD exacerbation is my PDX
