When auditing the MDM, in Table A there are an options for New Problem: No Additional Workup Planned, and New Problem: Additional Workup Planned. When during the course of an ER visit, the Hospitalist is asked to admit the patient, can the Hospitalist get credit for New Problem: Additional Workup Planned if the ER doctor is the one who ordered the additional workup?

I can see this both ways. Although the ER doctor is the one who ordered the work-up, the ER doctor is getting credit in Table B for the orders. Also, the Hospitalist would have ordered the workup if it had not already been done so, and they are waiting for the results in order to make their decision on treatment/management. Since this is additional testing which the results were not available to the provider during the encounter, and the provider needs these results in order to determine the appropriate treatment, would you consider this as "Additional Workup Planned"?

I have ran into a similar issue and would like to have a better understanding. My scenario, ER physician requested consult from 2 specialists which saw the pt and made a decision for surgery before the hospitalist saw and admitted the pt. I am told that due to the high risk meds and the surgery that this is considered follow up because high risk meds require monitoring and they are giving the admitting provider credit for the consult the ER provider requested? I have been trained that we do not count monitoring as add'l follow up and not to count another providers work. I look forward to any input/guidance.
