has anyone heard of questions re: race that must be asked during scheduling if you have ehr systems? i made an appt. this am with a specialist and was asked three questions re: my race. the receptionist told me it was part of the new law and was for gov't statistics. please advise. thank you ljb

Tis true! Race and Ethnicity are required.
 
Yes, the government is now keeping statisics on a mmultitude of things. The reasoning is that many health care problems are race related, sickle cell anemia or Tay Sachs disease for example and they want to know if people are being treated appropriately, who is seeking treatment and what types of treatments are effective.

As the government and private payers try to move into the pay for performance arena they need to know how illnesses are treated in the different areas of the country, what practices yield the best results and which ones don't work.
 
Also ties in with MU

Some of these elements were also required to be included in the EHR system for providers to meeting Meaningful Use - ties in with the PPACA regulations.
 
We definitely collect this information, we just don't ask for it when scheduling the appointment. I think I would be caught off guard as a patient if asked this while trying to schedule.
