Patient was recently seen with the following diagnosis:

Left Mastitis (resolved)
Left Shoulder Pain (Chronic)
Fibrocystic breasts.
HCG (-) Negative

Our coders coded as follows:

Left Mastitis (resolved) V58.89 Aftercare, NEC
Left Shoulder Pain (chronic) 719.41 Joint Pain-Shlder
Fibrocystic Breasts 610.1 Diffus cystic Mastopathy
HCG (-) Negative V72.41 Pregnancy Exam/Test Negative

Our Billing Department is questioning the appropriateness of using the V58.89 Aftercare, NEC for the Left Mastitis (resolved). Does anyone out there have any comments? Do you feel the AfterCare code is appropriate or should something else be used? Since the AfterCare code is a V Code is it appropriate to use as a primary diagnosis code? Appreciate any help with these questions?

It might help if you posted the patient's note for this visit. V58.89 is ok to use and primary or additional dx according to the table in the ICD-9 book.
