Example from the AAPC boot camp: "Mr J present w/complaints of left hip pain. He is six mos p/op total replacement of same. Pain is constant and if he sleeps on his LT side he is woken at night by stabbing pain at the upper end of his thigh. After examining the area and reviewing films, the orthpedist dx the condition as pain due to prosthetic hip."

T84.84xD was the dx provided in the example.

Guidelines state: "The aftercare Z codes should also not be used for aftercare for injuries. For aftercare of an injury, assign the acute injury code with the appropriate character (for subsequent encounter)."

So, assuming this is a non-traumatic injury...the Z code would be appropriate, is that correct? Regardless if it 91 days or 180 days past sx?

If it was a traumatic injury and after the 90 day global period and/or treatment is directed at a current, acute disease ..continue on with the injury diagnosis and the appropriate subsequent extender....correct?
