We see many patients with food allergies. They rarely present in actual anaphylactic shock due to the food allergy, but rather present with a history of anaphylactic shock due to a particular food. What is the best way to code this diagnosis? Can we use the 995.6x codes or are these only used if the patient is actively experiencing symptoms? Or do we code with the
V15.0x codes for personal history of allergy to a particular food? in which case these are "additional codes" only and we would need a primary dx?
Thanks for your help.
