We have an anesthesiologist who is performing a TEE prior to/during surgeries. Our dilemma is billing for him. The hospital owns the equipment (TC modifier), and the cardiologist reads the TEE (26 modifier). How can we bill for the anesthesiologists' role in the patients care? Can we?

If the TEE is done intra-op for monitoring, it's not separately billable.

If the TEE is done prior to surgery for diagnostic purposes, it's billed with modifiers 26, 59. If doppler is also used (93320 and/or 93325) those codes are billed with a 26 modifier.

See if 93313 or 93316 applies to your scenario - this is for the TEE probe placement ONLY.

This does NOT include the reading, acquisition of images nor a separate report done at the end.
