Are APN's required to have a Dr signature on their notes in an inpatient setting? I've read guidelines and still a little confused.

It depends on a few things...
1. Are they allowed to practice independently in the state? Here in NH, APRNs can practice independently without a supervising provider. So you wouldn't need a co-signature.
2. How are they credentialled with the payers? If they have their own billing numbers, then they don't need a supervising provider/co-signature.
3. What about your organization's policy? Our hospital (even with the above criteria) requires an MD co-signature on all APRN notes. It has nothing to do with billing or the nurse practice act...it's simply an internal policy which supercedes the regulatory guidance above. So yes, a co-signature is required in our hospital.
Hope this helps, but you'll have to investigate because it varies by state and by hosptial.

Amanda, I think you'll have to search the Board of Nursing by state. Not sure if there's a national site, since each state has their own rules.
