If a patient comes into the office for a check up before starting another round of chemo, is it appropriate to use code Z51.11 for encounter for antineoplastic chemotherapy as a secondary diagnosis? From everything I've researched, this code is for the actual encounter of receiving treatment and then as a secondary code should there be a side effect of treatment. I personally don't think it would be correct to use it in the case I mentioned above, but a co-worker disagrees. Would like some help from some of the other "experts" here!

Thanks!

Amanda

Z51.11 is a first listed only code. Look in your guidelines in the Z chapter section. At the end of this section is a piece titled first only allowed Z codes. If the patient is in the office in between chemo treatments, I use the cancer diagnosis.
