Our oncology specialist documented discussion with a patient regarding smoking cessation and narcotics overuse as 'counseling him...' and I applied code V65.42 as a 4th code. I was told by a nurse it's not applicable for a specialist in this case to use counseling codes. Is she correct? If so, when should the code(s) be used. Or, if I used the code appropriately, I need information to support it beyond the ICD-9 code book. Any suggestions?
