I was listening in on a webinar thru my Oncology Network and the case study was a pt w/chemo induced anemia and lymphoma. When the presenter read back the answers for the case study on the dx codes, she stated 285.3, 202.80 and an E code. Does anyone use E codes?

We began using E-codes when our Medicare contractor changed their LCD to require them (E933.1 or E930.7). I think they are appropriate but some of our commercial payers get confused. And our new Medicare contractor doesn't like them so we aren't using them right now for Medicare claims.

Honestly, in the real world, I think we have to code the way the payers want us to. They all interpret the coding rules a little bit differently and want things submitted a little differently. The E codes seem to be one of those things. I think if your payers are paying, don't change it.
