Hi all,

I'm a new coder working with hospitalists. My question pertains to the correct E&M code for the Nurse Practitioner treating a patient in the ER when called from the floor for triage.

My thoughts are the Observation codes as my understanding is the ER codes are reserved for the ER physicians when working on the same patient.
I have been researching on my own but would love input to come up with a definative answer.

E/M services provided in the ED use 99281-99285. Both the hospitalist and the EDP can use these codes on the same date. Outpatient E/M services on the same DOS that result in a hospital admission are included in the Hospital Care codes.

For a non-Medicare consult in the ED, use the office/outpatient consult codes. If the patient has Medicare and requires a consult in the ED, use the ED E/M codes.

Observation codes are assigned by the provider who initiated the observation status.
