I need help when using the moderate sedation codes 99151-99153 with dialysis intervention the codes.

We are trying to get a clear understanding of this "independent trained observer". All the CPT book says is individual who is qualified to monitor the patient during the procedure, who has no other duties during the surgery.

Who could this be? RN?:confused:

ZHealth Online Member Newsletter: November 30, 2016 provided the following information:
"A trained independent observer is required. This is a person that is qualified to monitor the patient and has no other duties during the procedure (e.g., nurse). This may be a hospital employee, which does not affect the physician’s ability to report moderate sedation. "
