Assistant coding out patient / hospital setting E/M code

Sometimes the providers do the H&P on OB patients who are seen in the labor and delivery floor. However, it states patient are seen as out patient. Do you bill an out patient e/M code or do you bill observation codes? It doesn't mentioned patient is on observation status... I would like to say I will bill the out patient E/M code but would like to be sure.. also patient was sent home the same day ..

does your hospital not triage in the ED for OB and just send them up?

I don't know the answer but I had similar issues when I worked in the hospital with no obs/ip order but I billed an office visit for the facility side.

I'd like to see what others have to say.
