Hello Everyone,
Can an assistan surgeon charge be billed for a doctor who is employed by another doctor if he assists his employer in the OR?

I am a bit confused, but wouldn't the other physicians clinic bill the assist for him? Or do the assistant and the employer work for the same clinic?

If you are a teaching hospital like St Lukes, KU or Truman then no because the residents or fellows are considered assitant surgeons.

Now if it is a procedure that the residents/fellows have never done and the primary surgeon does not feel comfortable with them assisiting, you would charge assit surgeon with in the same practice.

If they are from a different practice that office would charge for assit surgeon and your codes will need to be the same.

The assit surgeon also needs to dictate a op note also.

Hope this helps. Connie
