One of our PAs in pulmonary recently got her certification as an asthma educator. We want to start scheduling visits for asthma education but I'm unsure how to bill for them. I know the 98960 education code exists but this is apparently not paid by Medicare and is reimbursed at a low rate. I also looked at the HCPCS code S9441 for asthma education. I discussed what the visits would entail with her and she said the patient would come in and be roomed by the nurse(vitals and updating medication list, allergies, PMH). Then she would come in and do the education part with a limited examination(respiratory). I am trying to decide if this should be billed as above or with an E/M code based on time as most of the visit will be spent counseling the patient. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
