I have a psych dr that want's to know what information should he have if he is only doing a consult. He has been just doing a ful psych eval is this what he should keep doing? Also he is needing to know if he see's a patient for 16 minutes and is unable to optain a full H&P is there a code he can use for the time spent with the patient? He has not been coding anything and thinking this could be money lost if he can code something.

Psychiatric Diagnostic Procedures

The evaluation should include a biopsychosocial assessment of psychiatric history, mental status, and recommendations, for code 90791.

If an integration of medical services takes place during the consultation without psychotherapy such as physical examination elements, prescription of medication, ordering of lab work or other diagnostic studies, use code 90792.

Consultations are coded as a psychiatric evaluation and examination of the patient with an exchange of information by the primary physician and other informants such as a nurse or family members, and preparation of reports. I don't think the consultations codes are the ones you are looking for.

See CPT section Medicine / Psychiatry pg. 527
