What CPT codes(S) should be used to report services provided to a patient monitored in the Emergency Department over multiple days while waiting for an inpatient psychiatric bed to become available? The first day is reported with 99281-99285 or critical care codes. The second day and subsequent days used to be reported with Observation Care codes (99224-99226), which have been deleted. OUR PHYSICIAN IS NOT THE ADMITTING PHYSICIAN.......so now would we use the inpatient codes (99231-99233) or office/observation codes (99202-99204, 99211-99214)? (we have in the past just used multiple 99283/99284 codes and had them pay, but the wait times for outside placement facilities are getting longer.
