We have a Psychiatrist on staff that does Psychological Testing. We billed CPT 96101 for this testing. This testing would typically take 3 hours. CPT code 96101 is associated with 1-hour increments of psychologist/physician time including both face-to-face time administering tests to the patient and time interpreting test results and preparing the report. 96101 is also used when additional time is necessary to integrate other sources of clinical data.

Effective 1/1/19 CPT 96101 was deleted and replaced with the following codes:

96136>>Psych or neuro psych test admin (first 30 min)
96137>>" " (add'l 30 min)
96130>>Psychological testing eval (first 60 min)
96131>> " " (add'l 60 min)

My question is would all 4 codes need billed now? Can anyone elaborate on this?

96130 is administered by a physician and 96131 is the add on code, if the physician spend more time with the patient, we add more units to 96131. This code require documentation, clinical decision, treatment plan and interaction with the patient.

96136 is also administered by physician, Psychological or neuropsychological test administration/scoring by physician or other qualified healthcare professional, two or more tests, any method; first 30 minutes”. Treatment plan is not necessary, it can be verbal, written, or electronic. The 96137 is the add on code.

96138 is administered by a technician. 96139 is the add on code.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi, Can a Licensed Clinical Psychologist bill for 96136 + 96137.
Our LCP is planning to for a Psychological testing which is 4 hours long and wants to take a break after 2 hours. Please advise if we can bill 96136 for the first 30 minutes and 96137 *5.
