I am looking for some help with a discussion in our clinics regarding updating ICD Codes as of 10/1. What is the most appropriate was for DX codes to be updated on cases of patients that are still treating. Example patients that were treating before 10/1 and are still actively treating. An example would be M54.5.

Should...
1. therapist void the code M54.5, then replace it with M54.50?
2. therapist should resolve M54.5 as of 9/30 then add M54.50 as of 10/01?

I would also love any link you might be able to provide to support what is the most appropriate way. I looked but perhaps I am just to tired to find anything tonight. Any help is greatly appreciated. I currently am dealing with half the therapist viewing it one way and the other half the other way. However, I would like to develope a practice standared and uniformness for this.

Thank you,

Julie

Codes submitted to insurance depend solely on the date of service. Any date of service in 2021 prior to 10/1 should be coded using the 2021 manual. For dates of service10/1/2021 through 9/30/2022, the 2022 manual should be used even if the patient is receiving active treatment before 10/1/2021.
