Our administrator heard, but can't remember where, that when bilateral total knees are performed in a single operative session, Medicare will deny the second total knee arthroplasty. Not a 50% reduction, but a denial. Has anyone else caught wind of this??

I have never experienced this and I have billed many a bilateral TKA to Mcare. How was it billed? It must be one line with a 50 modifier with 1 unit.

We've not had anything deny yet. She just heard it was something new for 2013 but we can't find any documentation on it.
