A patient came into the office for sutures. He has asthma and when he came in his sutures the nurse did a pulse ox. When he came back for his 3 follow up visits, the nurse did a pulse ox every time. The doctor, however, did not discuss his asthma issues. The doctor wants to bill office visits for the 3 follow up visits even though it was during the global period for the sutures and he didn't address the asthma. Can the visits be billed?

Yes, I would charge for this.
I would use E/M code 99211(you can use for a nurse visit) with modifier 24 (unrelated E/M during post-op period)with the corresponding asthma dx code for each of the three visits.

I disagree

He was not coming in for asthma. I would not code these visits. They were post-op care and covered in the global period.

Hope that helps.
