Doctor delivered an 18 week fetus with signs of life. FHT noted at time of delivery. Living male delivered without complication by spontaneous vaginal delivery in vertex position. Baby lived for two hours.

Would this be billed as a delivery since the baby was alive at the time of the birth even though it was less than 20 weeks?

Thank you,

Cynthia Day

yes it should be coded as normal vaginal delivery only, if the fetus is dead intrauterine then it can be considered as abortion treatment plan. it is not as of the weeks to consider a delivery, it may be any week Here the baby delivered normally with FHT coded for the maternal record and can consider the weeks, for the baby record as premature and death.

Can I also charge the discharge on the same day as the delivery since baby died later same day?
