We are billing code 96136 with add on code 90833 and an appropriate level E/M code, but we are starting to receive denials on 96136 as "mutually exclusive". Should I add a modifier -59 to code 96136 to indicate this is a distinct procedural service?

I normally don't bill for psychiatry so any help will be appreciated.

There isn't a CCI edit between the 96136 and 90833.

Your conflict is between the 96136 and the E/M code. Is there a significant and separately identifiable E/M service happening that day, beyond what's being represented with the 96136 code?

If not, you shouldn't be billing an E/M service with the testing.

If there is a significant and separately identifiable E/M service, you should add a 25 modifier to your E/M code.
