How is billing done for the newborn/ infant in a facility setting? Is the newborn billed separately on the ub ? Thank you

As soon as the baby is born a chart is created for the infant separate from the mom, the chart must be constructed just like any other medical chart and must have a discharge summary and therfore its own UB created for billing the first listed code on all newborn claims is the V30-V39 code.

Newborn and Infant Different Under Coding

Don't forget too that coding has specifics in place for defining newborn and infant.

Newborn = 28 days or less (think no more than one month)
Infant = less than one year of age
