Hi,

I'm new to BH billing.

Can preventive services be billed for BH clinics- i.e. 99401 etc...?

My initial research is that these codes are for primary care not BH clinics... is that correct?

Thanks.

Preventive services are not restricted to any one specialty, however it would be unusual to see these provided at a specialty clinic such as for behavioral health. Preventive care services are those given for patients with no complaints or diagnosed problems and are for risk reduction and early detection to prevent potential development of future disease. These codes would not be used for services directed at the treatment of known or suspected problems that a BH clinic would normally be offering.

Hi, I appreciate your reply to my inquiry. Yes, I realize that these are for codes for preventive services and we do provide these types of services for adults and children at our locations and around the community including schools. Are these codes what we could use to start billing for these services? Thanks.
