I am wondering in what situations it is appropriate to bill a physicians radiology read that is performed during a surgical procedure.

My orthopedic surgeon often uses the "C-arm" during surgery for verification of screw/pin placements, etc. He reports the radiology code with modifier 26, since he is performing only the professional component. The hospital reports the radiology code with modifier TC, since they own the equipment.

Since your question said, "during a surgical procedure", I responded with an example that I have first hand experience with. As far as x-rays which are performed in the hospital setting, I'm pretty sure the professional component is going to be reported by the radiologist. If your doc is just reviewing the films, this may be included in the initial service he/she is performing.
