Hello, in diagnosis coding; if the provider documents that the patient has Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar disorder in the note on the same DOS, do we pick up both or does Bipolar Disorder encompass Major Depressive Disorder?
You only code the bipolar d/o. Refer to AHA Coding Clinic, First Quarter, 2020, p. 23:
"When documentation states bipolar disorder and mild major depressive disorder, recurrent, only assign F31.9, bipolar disorder, unspecified. Bipolar disorder includes both depression and mania. The code for depression would not be reported separately."
Also check the Excludes 1 Notes at the beginning of the F31 category in the ICD-10-CM manual.
