Hello all!

I received an email from an MD asking me this question about Bloodletting:

The ICD-10 code we use for that procedure is D75.1.

But I am now confused about the CPT code. It is unclear to me whether it should be 86960 or 99195.

We are doing a volume reduction of 1 unit of blood. However, in medical terms, this is the same a therapeutic phlebotomy. I didn’t realize that in the billing world, these two refer to different things. What’s the difference? Knowing how much each one reimburses would be of important. The procedure to which I’m referring should reimburse well over $100. But I realize that what SHOULD happen and what DOES happen are often very different things.

Let me know what you find.

After some research, I'm leaning toward coding the 86960, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks!
