I need help with a diagnosis code. The patient needs her breast implants removed because she is about to have cardiac surgery and the cardiologist requested that they be removed beforehand. There is nothing wrong with the implants, no contracture or anything. I've always been told to use 996.54 for any issues with implants but I don't feel like that is the appropriate code to use. Please help!

Thats interesting, I have not encountered a scenario like this. I def would not use 996.54 as that indicates something is wrong with the implant itself. I would use 996.79, Other complications; due to other internal prosthetic device, implant, and graft NEC. Having the implants has created a complication for the cardiac surgeon, there fore they are being removed.
