Hello,

If a patient comes into the ER and diagnosis with bronchitis but has a history of asthma (on medication daily for asthma) what would be the code?

490 says it excludes 493.90
but 493.90 says bronchitis asthmatic and the doctor just stated bronchitis (no mention of acute or chronic)

I am probably overthinking this but having one of those days

Thanks

bronchitis

If the doctor does not document asthma you would just code bronchitis even if you know the patient has a history of asthma. So to my way of thinking 490 would be correct.
