Is it legal to bundle a base lens code and add on as a package deal to bill to insurance? For instance, single vision lens (V2100) with mirror coding (V2761) and just bill V2100 to the insurance? Also, is it legal to bill a miscellaneous charge that has no type of HCPC code and bundle that into a base lens? We had a system that bundled several codes and now we have a new system that EVERYTHING is broken out. The opticians are having a lot of push back with charging all our long time patients for charges they were not charged before. I believe everything needs broken out but I told them I would see if there was some kind of legal way to bundle anything at all.

Thanks in advance,

Amber

The way I see it, everything has a HCPCS code for a reason. That is how you communicate what the patient is purchasing. Bundling is fraudulent because you are getting the insurance company to pay for something that they would otherwise not pay for....if you were using the correct code.
