Good afternoon,

I would like to get some ideas on how to code for Buprenorphine/counseling which is used for Opioid Dependence patients in an outpatient hospital clinic by a Medical Doctor and is it different for a Psychiatry physician in the Psychiatry clinic.

I have never coded this before, but this is what I would think. I think the medical dr should just use EM codes and code based on time. Read the CPT rules for billing on time.
For the mental health provider, I would think that they could use either EM codes (if dr is a pscyiatrist) or they could probably just use therapy codes, so long as they are using therapeutic measures to help pt overcome the problem.

We provide this service in our clinics. The MD Psychiatrist bills for the type of service provided either a half w/EM (90805) or a Med. Managment (90862) and then if they actually gave the medicine, then we charge for that as well.
