Do you have to wait for the pathology report to bill for a biopsy? I have always waited for the pathology to bill but there is some question in our office as it not being necessary.
EX: Pt has lung nodule....physician performs bx and lobectomy for carcinoma. Office feels we can bill immediately using dx code for lung nodule. I wait for pathology report and change dx to carcinoma, etc and bill accordingly. Who is correct or can both ways be billed? Thank you for your help!!
 
the only time you are required to wait for the path report is for skin lesion excisions. In your example either answer is correct as you may code from the information available at the time of codeing or you may wait until after study since the bx was performed same day.
