At our facility, when a patient is receiving a continuous EEG, there are times when the leads need to be removed temporarily for the patient to go to CT or MRI for a procedure. The leads are then reattached once the other procedure is complete. My question is: when calculating time for the continuous EEG CPT codes (95705-95716) is the time when leads are removed for another procedure included in the total time for the EEG, or are we supposed to subtract that time from the total EEG recording time? I know that for inpatient continuous EEGs the CPT codes are not going to be reported, but they are directly tied to our charge codes and we are trying to be consistent in our charging methodology.

For example:
A continuous video EEG with continuous monitoring is started at 0700. The patient has the leads removed at 0900 for an MRI. The leads are reattached at 1000 and recording continues until 1930 when the study is concluded. Would we code CPT 95716 for 12.5 hours of recording (0700-1930) or CPT 95713 for 11.5 hours of recording (0700-1930 minus 1 hour for MRI)?
