Hi - I am being told that U0002 crosswalks to 87635 but U0001 crosswalks to 87999. Do you agree or should both HCPCS be able to crosswalk to 87635 depending on payer preference?

Wiki Can both HCPCS for COVID19 testing crosswalk to CPT 87635?

No.. they cannot ... U0001 is for testing that is done using the CDC's developed assay/kit. I have seen payers only accepting 87635 or U0002. Is your lab using the CDC assay/kit?

So here are the two codes side by side.. I highlighted the differences. At this point, I am not sure why there is a difference in the language specific to the probe technique. U0001 is specific for testing that is being run via the CDC and/or health department. I would hate to speculate at to why the wording is what it is. Important to note that these are the codes for the diagnostic- and/or molecular pathology testing.
U0001- 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel should be used when specimens are sent to the CDC and CDC-approved local/state health department laboratories- $35.92
87635- Infectious agent detection by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA); severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]), amplified probe technique- $51.31
U0002- 2019-nCoV Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2/2019-nCoV (COVID-19), any technique, multiple types or subtypes (includes all targets), non-CDC should be used when specimens are sent to commercial laboratories, e.g. Quest or LabCorp, and not to the CDC or CDC-approved local/state health department laboratories- $51.31
Here are some screen shots from the Aetna website.. many of the payers have landing pages for providers...the collection codes that Aetna is listing are not the HCPCS codes that were released by CMS -G2023 and G2024.
