Historically, an attending physician wirtes a D/C summary and cahrges the appropriate D/C E&M. Can other doctors from the team also charge for their notes on the day of discharge? So multiple 99238 will be billed?
thanks, Lora B.

No only one MD should be billing for a D/C. If in the same specialty there should only be one CPT for that DOS as well. Hope that helps.

Thanks, that's great!

It doesn't sound as though there should be more than one D/C charge but I've had a couple of docs try to slide in with a note in the chart and then go charge a 99238, even though they were not the attending who wrote the D/C summary. Having said that, if the patient was under the care of an attending an a specialist or two, then those specialists can also wirte D/C Summaries and charge a professional fee for it.

I guess it depends on the facility. I know many different specialties see pts in our hospital but we only allow one d/c regardless who is the attending. :)

only the attending may write the discharge order and charge for the discharge, if there are other docs seeing the patient, they may see the patient on the discharge date and may write a note agreeing with the discharge and give instructions to the patient, but the charge will be a subsequent inpatient encounter.
