My physician performed a bilateral SI joint injection 27096 and a bilateral greater trochanteric bursa injection 20610. Our doctor's select their own codes and then I audit the charges before they are entered.

My inclination is that these two cannot be billed together because they are of the same anatomic location...is that correct?

The sacroiliac joint and the greater trochanteric bursa are not the same anatomical location. The SI joint is the joint between the sacrum and the ilium. The greater trochanteric bursa is on the distal side (outside surface) of the upper femur (the trochanter). However, because 20610 describes any major joint which can include the SI, an NCCI edit does exist between these two codes. Where appropriate, as it sounds in this case, modifier 59 can be appended to one of the codes to indicate they are actually separate injections.
