I work for an Internal Medicine practice whos docs make the rounds at a critical access hospital. Due to a current shortage of docs in our practice recently, the hospital has considered hiring a hospitalist to cover the rounds every other week. However they want us to bill for the services using the locum modifier. We will be reimbursing the hospital the hospitalist salary

Any Advice?

Are you actually short a physician, as in someone left your practice? If that is the case then you can bill under that providers name/number with the Q6 for up to 60 calendar days, then that is it.

If they are wanting you to bill under a provider that is still there and working, ie not on vacation or sick leave, then that is fraud.
