Patient has left knee pain. X-rays are taken of the right knee as a comparison. Is anyone getting paid for this? As far as I know, you should not be billing out comparison views. Any thoughts?

We don't take comparison x-rays very often, but when we do we've used mod 52. We'll put a note on the charge that will print out with the claim and it says "comparison view" or something. I feel like we should charge because it was performed and it's up to the insurance company to do with it what they want. Some pay and some don't, but we don't do it often enough for me to give you much info.

Our clinic takes them, but does not charge for them. In order to bill them you would have to have a documented diagnosis. Since it's just for comparison, you don't have that.
